Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.
My first name is Smiti. In Hindi it means ‘smile’. I love my name and I’m really thankful that my parents chose this name. Not only is it easy to pronounce and short, but it also has a cool meaning. š
I recently became a mom and one important task that we had as to-be parents was to pick a name. Ever since we found out about the baby I was excited to discuss names with my husband. But he was chill and thought we should wait until we knew the gender of the baby so that we had less work. As soon as we found out that we were having a girl, the name search began. Both of us had a few criteria for the name selection. It should be an easy Indian name, it should have a nice meaning or should have some sort of significance to us, it should be short and it should be easily pronouncable in India, Germany (that’s where we live) and overall internationally. My husband made an excel sheet and asked our family for suggestions as well. We had a few favourites and also asked our German friends to pronounce them to see if it made sense. We decided not to disclose the final name until the birth so that there is some sort of surprise for our family and friends (they already knew that it’s a girl).
Our daughter Avni was born on 08th November 2023. Avni means ‘The Earth’ in Hindi. The first piece of clothing that I bought for the baby was this new born body suit which I love. It felt very apt to name her after it. She wore it on her way home from the hospital and it is now too tiny for her already (oh they grow up so fast!). It has the photo of the planet Earth on it and reads ‘take care of me’. We hope to take care of our Avni and hope to continue living sustainably to the best of our capability taking care of the planet Earth. As parents we also have a huge responsibility and we would strive to raise our Avni to take care of the Earth.

Both my husband and I work in the field of space engineering and somehow our daughter is surrounded by a lot of space themed things!
Our Avni is now 2 months old and we love her to the Moon.
